Spiral galaxy NGC 6946 – MIRI

A galaxy with a bright white core and several large spiral arms extending out from that core.

Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) found large amounts of dust within two Type II supernovae, Supernova 2004et and Supernova 2017eaw, located in spiral galaxy NGC 6946. This supports the theory that supernovae played a key role in supplying dust to the early universe.

Webb is an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency. (Credits: KPNO, NSF's NOIRLab, AURA, Image processing: Alyssa Pagan (STScI))
